★★★★★ Part comeback, part requiem, all extraordinary.
Likely the least searchable band in internet history, Matt Johnson’s mischievously titled outfit was messing with the heads of would be fans long before Google came of age. People found The The on their own, and knew they’d hit on post-punk royalty.
The line-up was constantly evolving—along with music titans such as Johnny Marr, past members have included neuroscientists, photographers and film directors—but the one constant has been Johnson, whose vocals are immediately recognisable.
Last year saw the release of the band’s first single in 15 years, and 2018 brings with it the first live appearances since 2002, some which sold out in minutes.
This Melbourne International Arts Festival will be the first time The The has played Melbourne since 1989. Don’t wait for another chance.
★★★★ Long-awaited return reopens brilliant teenage diaries.
